EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: colorless liquid.
Causes eye and skin irritation. May cause respiratory and digestive
tract irritation. The toxicological properties of this material have
not been fully investigated. Aspiration hazard if swallowed. Can
enter lungs and cause damage. Warning!
Target Organs: No data found.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation.
Ingestion:
Aspiration hazard. May cause gastrointestinal irritation with
nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The toxicological properties of this
substance have not been fully investigated.
Inhalation:
May cause respiratory tract irritation. The toxicological properties
of this substance have not been fully investigated. Aspiration may
lead to pulmonary edema. Vapors may cause dizziness or suffocation.
Aspiration hazard.
Chronic:
Effects may be delayed.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes
while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if
irritation develops or persists. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an
unconscious person. Possible aspiration hazard. Get medical aid.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not
breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult,
give oxygen. Get medical aid. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases
may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Use water
spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Vapors may be heavier
than air. They can spread along the ground and collect in low or
confined areas. Containers may explode when heated.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or
chemical foam. Contact with water or steam may produce toxic and
flammable vapors.
Flash Point: > 212e deg F (> 100.00 deg C)
Autoignition Temperature: 396 deg F ( 202.22 deg C)
Explosion Limits, Lower:Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 0; Flammability: 1; Instability: 0
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth),
then place in suitable container. Avoid runoff into storm sewers and
ditches which lead to waterways. Clean up spills immediately,
observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Wear a
self contained breathing apparatus and appropriate personal
protection. (See Exposure Controls, Personal Protection section).
Remove all sources of ignition. Provide ventilation.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with
eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid
ingestion and inhalation.
Storage:
Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped
with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate
ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.

Section 12 - Ecological Information
|
Ecotoxicity:
No data available.
No information available.
Environmental:
Terrestrial: The lack of a hydrolyzable functional group and
chromophoric group capable of absorbing sunlight in hexadecane
suggests that neither hydrolysis nor photolysis should be important
in soil. Aquatic: Hydrolysis in water should be unimportant because
the compound lacks any hydrolyzable functional group. Atmospheric:
Found to be present in the atmosphere exclusively in the gas phase
during summer and predominantly in the gas phase during winter.
Expected to biodegrade but with little bioaccumulation.

as a hazardous waste.
US EPA guidelines for the classification determination are listed in 40 CFR Parts 261.3.
Additionally, waste generators must consult state and local hazardous waste regulations to
ensure complete and accurate classification.
